A favourite read is ‘Orbitsville’ by Bob Shaw, and its sequels. Based around the concept of a Dyson Sphere - a vast sphere with a sun at its centre, Conceived by scientist Freeman Dyson in 1959. Star Trek used the idea in TNG:6/4 Relics.
