This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

Getting into lobbies with friends is indeed still needlessly convoluted. At least in the beta. You can invite them to your "link party" which allows you to join each other's quests like normal, but you don't see each other in camp unless you join their "environmental link" or whatever it's called.
