As with most minuscule Latinate letters, we first meet the [et] ligature in New Roman Cursive, developed in the 3rd century C.E. But it's not alone; there are several other [e] ligatures. The way [e] is written, the final stroke can ligate with [c], [d], [g], [m], [n], [r], [s], [t] and [x].
