Witch balls. Hate to be a party pooper, but those glass ball decorations you see in museums labelled "witch balls"? The idea they are old protective objects is wrong. The first ref to such a thing is in "Country Life" magazine in 1913. It is a 20thC invented tradition. Sorry!
